KLASTER+

Energy Communities of the Future

KLASTER+ is a research and development project focused on integrating local renewable energy sources, energy storage systems, and consumers within microgrids that interact with the distribution grid.

The main aim of the project is to develop and deploy a field controller with the new KLASTER+ functionality. The device will operate at the point where the microgrid connects to the distribution system operator’s (DSO) network.

The controller will enable two-way data exchange between the microgrid and the DSO’s system. This will allow local renewable energy sources, energy storage systems, and loads to be controlled in response to current grid operating conditions.

Why this project?

The growth of distributed energy requires microgrids to interact safely and flexibly with distribution networks. The proposed solution will:

  • improve the use of locally generated energy,
  • increase the self-consumption of renewable energy,
  • reduce the need to curtail renewable generation or disconnect microgrids,
  • maintain the required operating parameters at the point of connection,
  • improve grid stability and security.

The project will support local energy communities, increase the use of renewable energy, and help reduce energy poverty.

From model to deployment

The work includes the analysis of real-world data, microgrid modeling, the development of control algorithms, the definition of controller requirements, laboratory studies, and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing. The final stage will demonstrate the solution in a real-world microgrid environment.

The project is carried out by Warsaw University of Technology in cooperation with partners from academia, a manufacturer specializing in power-system automation, and energy infrastructure operators.

Funding

The project is funded from public funds under the “Science for the Development of Society” program of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education. Project No. NdRS/SP/0189/2025/01.
